Yolanda Resendiz
“Full tummy, happy heart” is an oft-repeated phrase at the home of Yolanda Resendiz. A native of Xichú, Guanjuato in Central Mexico, Yolanda grew up feasting on traditional dishes prepared by her mother and grandmother from the region’s abundant local crops. Although she seldom cooked growing up, childhood memories—and frequent calls to her mother—play an important part in her culinary repertoire today.
Yolanda moved to the US in 1990, where she quickly realized that in order to continue enjoying the foods of her home country, she’d have to learn to make them herself! Although finding traditional ingredients was difficult at that time, today Yolanda takes full advantage of the many Hispanic markets that have sprung up in all over California and much of the US in recent years.
A mother of two who cooks copiously for recreation and also teaches occasional classes, Yolanda finds true joy in the kitchen, and thinks nothing of juggling six or seven dishes at a time—all while joking and chatting with her companions. In the pages that follow, she shares some of her most prized recipes.
