Mexican Prickley Pear Water Recipe

“Tuna water, yuk!” It’s a natural reaction, but don’t let the name frighten you. “Tuna” is actually the Spanish word for the flavorful fruit of the prickly pear cactus, typically available in September and October.

Ingredients
Serves
1 1/2 pounds prickly pears, spines removed and peeled*
1 cup sugar**
8 cups water

*Prickly pear range in color from pale green to reddish-purple.

**This is an approximate measure. Add sugar to your taste.

 
 
Directions 
 

1. Combine the peeled prickly pears, sugar and ½ cup of water in a blender and liquefy.

2. Pour the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove excess pulp and seeds.

3. Pour the mixture into a spacious pitcher and add the remaining water. Adjust the sugar to suit your taste.

4. Chill for several hours.

5. Serve in tall glasses.

 

 
Preparation time: approximately 15 minutes plus chilling time.
