Quick Black Chocolate Buttercream

This dramatic black buttercream stars as crusted lava in the Amazing Erupting Volcano Cake. It also works wonderfully for Halloween cupcakes, or anywhere else you need a black frosting.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup unsweetened cocoa
1/2 cup black onyx cocoa*
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
6 cups powdered sugar
2/3 cup milk
 *Locate black onyx cocoa at Savory Spice Shop or
King Arthur’s Flour
Directions
  1. In a small saucepan melt the butter.
  1. Remove from the heat and whisk in the regular and black cocoa and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined.
  1. Pour into the bowl of a stand mixer and, alternately add the powdered sugar and milk while mixing on low speed, beginning and ending with powdered sugar. Scrape the bowl after each addition. The frosting will be thin but spreadable.
