Black Buttercream Frosting

Utterly simple to prepare, this deep, dark frosting is ideal for cute Halloween cupcakes. As for the taste, who’s not going to love a basic blend of butter, sugar, cocoa and vanilla?

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup black onyx cocoa*
2 2/3 cups confectioner’s sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
*Locate black onyx cocoa at Savory Spice Shop or King Arthur’s Flour  
  1. In small bowl cream the butter until light and fluffy.
  2. Sift in about half of the cocoa and confectioner’s sugar and mix well.
  3. Add about half the milk and mix well.
  4. Repeat with the remaining dry ingredients and milk, beating until fluffy and spreadable. (Add a bit more milk if the frosting seems too stiff.)
  5. Blend in vanilla.
